Grief and the Unexpected Triggers

Just when we think we've found our footing, grief has a way of catching us by surprise.
It can happen anywhere.
A song playing in a restaurant.
A familiar perfume drifting through a store.
A favorite food.
A holiday tradition.
A stranger who looks remarkably like someone we love.
Without warning, a memory surfaces and suddenly we find ourselves overwhelmed with emotion.
Why Unexpected Grief Triggers Happen
Many grieving people become frustrated when this happens. We wonder why we are crying over something so small. We question whether we are moving backward in our healing.
But grief doesn't follow a straight path.
It never has.
The people we love become woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. Their favorite songs, places, smells, traditions, and routines are connected to our memories of them.
When we encounter those things, it is only natural that emotions follow.
An unexpected grief trigger is not a sign that you are failing.
It is often a reminder that love still exists.
I remember times when the smallest things would unexpectedly bring Melanie to mind. A song. A photograph. A memory shared by someone else. Sometimes the tears would come without warning.
Over time, I learned not to fear those moments.
Instead, I began to see them as reminders of a life that mattered.
A life that continues to be remembered.
A life that left an imprint on my heart.
When Grief Catches You by Surprise
If you find yourself caught off guard by unexpected tears, be gentle with yourself.
You are not moving backward.
You are not losing ground.
You are simply experiencing what it means to love someone deeply and miss them greatly.
Grief will always have its triggers.
But perhaps those moments are not interruptions to our healing.
Perhaps they are invitations to pause, remember, and honor the love that remains.
Because sometimes a trigger is nothing more than love asking to be remembered.

Such a great and thoughtful reminder that live never dies.
