When we think of all the emotions that come with grief the first one that often comes to mind is sadness. And while sadness is certainly part of the journey, it is far from the whole picture. Grief is more than one emotion. It is so complex and layered. There are many faces of grief. It can be depicted by anger, anxiety, regret, guilt, worry, resentment, and absolutely – love. It is an emotional storm that can take us by surprise, even long after a loss.

Have you ever just felt angry and wondered where it was coming from? Grief can often look like anger. It could be anger at the loss itself, at your circumstances, at people, or even at God.

Grief can show up as anxiety – a sudden fear of the future or of being alone.

It can bring regret over things said or left unsaid, or guilt for what we did or didn’t do. Worry often follows close behind, especially when life feels uncertain or unstable in the wake of loss.

And then there’s resentment. It can creep in when others seem to move on more quickly, or when we feel left behind in our pain. Yet, woven into all of this is love. Grief exists because love exists. We grieve deeply because we loved deeply—and that love doesn’t go away just because someone is no longer physically present.

Those who haven’t walked this journey may struggle to understand how grief touches every part of life. It disrupts routines, changes relationships, and reshapes our understanding of the world and ourselves. It doesn’t follow a schedule or fit neatly into stages.

Yes, grief is more than one emotion. Understanding our grief is more than just sadness allows us to give ourselves and others – greater compassion and space to heal. It’s okay to feel a thousand things at once. It’s okay to not have words for what you feel. Grief is not a sign of weakness, but of the depth of your love and humanity.

Friends, you’re not alone in this. Grief is many things, and you’re allowed to feel them all.
