When we think about courage, we often picture grand acts of bravery. We think of people overcoming incredible obstacles or facing extraordinary challenges. But some of the greatest courage I have ever witnessed has been found in grieving hearts. Because walking the grief journey takes courage.

It takes courage to get out of bed when your heart is heavy.

It takes courage to face another day when the person you love is no longer here.

It takes courage to walk into a room where their absence feels painfully obvious.

And perhaps most of all, it takes courage to allow yourself to heal.

Many grieving people don't talk about this part.

The fear that healing somehow means leaving their loved one behind.

The fear that finding joy again might diminish the depth of their love.

The fear that moving forward feels too much like moving on.

I understand those fears.

After Melanie died, there were times when allowing myself to experience any joy felt uncomfortable. There were moments when hope felt unattainable and looking toward the future felt uncertain.

But over time, I realized that healing was not asking me to leave her behind.

Healing was asking me to keep living. To keep loving. To keep hoping. To keep believing that life still held purpose.

There is a time when grieving and healing can walk hand-in-hand, and that requires courage.

The courage to laugh again.

The courage to make plans again.

The courage to trust again.

The courage to dream again.

Not because the pain is gone. But because life is still calling us forward.

If grieving feels difficult, perhaps it's because it is. It's not weak, easy or passive.

Allowing our hearts to heal as we continue to grieve is one of the bravest things we will ever do.

It asks us to carry both love and loss in the same heart while continuing to move forward. And every small step you take is evidence of a courage you may not even recognize in yourself. A courage that is quietly helping you heal.
